Living costs in Cape Town

Cost calculation for Cape Town

Living costs in Cape Town can vary significantly and very much depend on your lifestyle. Generally, the living expenses are a bit lower compared to most European cities. The costs for shared accommodation vary between R4,000 – R6,500 per month, depending on the area you want to live in. As in most cities, the rent in the city centre is higher than in suburbs. When choosing accommodation you should consider that public transport in South Africa is not very well developed and reliable. Therefore we recommend you either choose centrally located accommodation and rent or buy a car. Rental cars are available from ~ R,3800 per month. Should you consider buying a used car, you can get a fairly good and reliable car for ~ +/- R50,000. In terms of eating and going out, Cape Town offers a wide-ranging selection of excellent restaurants, bars, pubs and clubs that are reasonably priced. When budgeting for your stay abroad don’t forget to take the numerous adventure and sightseeing opportunities in and around Cape Town into account.

We have successfully placed and supported over hundreds of volunteers, interns and language course students over the last ten years. Seeing them succeed in gaining international experiences and adapting to a new cultural environment is most rewarding. It is my passion to share my own volunteer experience with our programme participants and to help them gain intercultural experience.
